Culbertson enjoys teaching because getting students to realize how music is constructed harmonically and rhythmically is rewarding. Once a student has that deeper understanding, so much of music becomes accessible not only to enjoy and listen too, but to be able to learn and play and accomplish on their own.
In music and all aspects of life today, students put so much pressure on each other and more importantly themselves. Yes, it is difficult and requires hard work, but it can be so rewarding and downright a fun time, if students and teachers together realize that the music is about a message and building a relationship with their audience.
Beethoven said, “To play a wrong note is insignificant, but to play without passion is inexcusable.”
Matt has taught my 11yr old son Liam classical piano for the past four years. He has a wonderful way of knowing when to stretch him with complicated pieces and when to pull back and have fun to keep him engaged. Matt has connected with Liam effectively through their love of music, and Liam considers Matt a friend.
